What your tills must do
- Charge 20p on every eligible line, shown separately on the receipt, in every store — including stores exempt from taking returns.
- Redeem vouchers safely — accept each voucher once, and only once, including when the connection drops.
- Keep the deposit flag current as products are added, delisted and resized, without a weekly manual job.
- Record every movement so deposits, refunds and handling fees can be claimed and reconciled against what the scheme pays.
Your timeline

- Through 2027 — register with the scheme administrator and fix your till behaviour in test.
- Before 1 October 2027 — run one full rehearsal per store format: charge, redeem, claim.

What a deposit return scheme readiness check tells you
From 1 October 2027, a 20p deposit applies to PET bottles and metal cans from 150ml to 3L across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Every eligible line has to be flagged in your product data before your tills can charge it, so a product file that is vague about size or container material is the first thing that breaks.
This check reads the descriptions, sizes and barcodes in your own file, in your own browser, and tells you three things: roughly how many lines look in scope, how many rows are too thin to call, and which ones to fix first. It is an indicative screen, not the scheme's registered-products list — that list is published by Exchange for Change.
